Worker Dead After Incident at Marshall County Mine

Alpha Metallurgical Resources said Aaron Warrix was struck by rock at a mine and died shortly after, as state and federal investigators review the accident.

  • On Thursday evening, shuttle car operator Aaron Warrix, 53, died at Horse Creek Eagle Mine in Raleigh County after being struck by a piece of rock.
  • Warrix had worked for Alpha Metallurgical Resources and its subsidiary, Marfork Coal, for four and a half years before the accident.
  • The federal Mine Safety Health Administration and the state Office of Miners' Health, Safety, and Training are investigating the accident and its circumstances.
  • "We are heartbroken to learn of Aaron's passing," said Alpha chief executive officer Andy Eidson. "Our hearts are with Aaron's wife, family, and friends."
  • Governor Patrick Morrisey and first lady Denise Morrisey released a statement; this fatality marks the first mining death recorded in West Virginia this year.
