Work begins on 'historic' Wylfa nuclear plans
The contract lets Rolls-Royce SMR begin design work and recruitment for the project, which is expected to create 8,000 jobs.
- Today, Rolls-Royce SMR and state-owned Great British Energy-Nuclear signed a contract enabling immediate work on three SMRs at Wylfa on the coast of Anglesey. The agreement allows design and supply chain work to commence.
- Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced in November that Wylfa would host Britain's first SMRs, setting the foundation for this agreement. The contract enables GBE-N to finalize site-specific designs and secure critical components from suppliers.
- Each unit will power one million homes annually with a life cycle of at least 60 years. The project will create 3,000 jobs local to Wylfa and an additional 5,000 jobs UK-wide.
- Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the investment will "strengthen our energy security, create skilled jobs" and support homegrown nuclear technology. National Wealth Fund CEO Oliver Holbourn called today's announcement "a significant moment for the future of our nuclear industry."
- Rolls-Royce SMR is evaluating sites for a new factory, including one at Deeside in Flintshire, with a decision expected later this year. The three Wylfa SMRs are expected to become operational in the mid-2030s.
