Protection of Women’s Sports Senate Hearing Skipped by Democrats
Witnesses urged testing and NCAA rule changes as Republicans dominated the hearing and Democrats largely stayed away, with more than 70% backing separate sports in polls.
- On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing on protecting women's sports with ten Democrats, including two women, absent; only Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., attended briefly.
- North Carolina and South Carolina have enacted women's sports protections, with North Carolina overriding Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's 2023 veto to pass the Fairness in Women's Sports Act, which took effect January 1 this year.
- Carly Smolak, an Oregon native and retired soccer and Australian Rules football player, urged decisive leadership, stating 'Leaders need to lead' and expressing frustration: 'Cowering around this issue, hoping somebody else solves it, is so frustrating to watch because I don't think they see what I see.'
- Durbin criticized the hearing as not a responsible exercise of the committee, expressing disappointment that Democratic colleagues departed despite evidence that physical harm risks are real and documented.
- Polls by the New York Times, Quinnipiac and Pew Research Center show more than 70% public support for protecting women's sports, while Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, whose veto was overridden, competes in the ongoing midterm election to succeed Sen. Thom Tillis.
