Marathon world record-holder Chepngetich provisionally suspended over banned substance
KENYA, JUL 17 – Ruth Chepngetich tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide at 3,800 ng/mL, far exceeding the 20 ng/mL threshold, leading to a provisional suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit.
- On July 17, 2025, Ruth Chepngetich was provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after her March 14, 2025 sample tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide.
- Following the notification on April 16, she was informed and voluntarily suspended herself on April 19, the Athletics Integrity Unit said.
- The sample contained 3,800 ng/mL of hydrochlorothiazide, exceeding the 20 ng/mL threshold, and Brett Clothier said the AIU continued its investigation before imposing a provisional suspension.
- With upcoming competitions at stake, the suspension marks a dramatic fall for Chepngetich, and she became the sixth Kenyan runner provisionally suspended by the AIU this year.
- With her case ongoing, Chepngetich has the right to a disciplinary tribunal, and there is currently no indication of how long the investigation will take.
