Women, visible minorities gaining ground in venture capital, private equity: study

The Business Development Bank of Canada found 88% of general partners had women on investment committees and 76% had visible minorities, highlighting growing diversity in venture capital.

  • Nov. 26, 2025 — The Business Development Bank of Canada reported 88 per cent of GPs had at least one woman, and 76 per cent had at least one visible minority on investment committees.
  • BDC surveyed 68 GPs and more than 550 portfolio companies over the winter, covering a small portion of an industry estimated at 290 general partners and 558 private equity firms.
  • Analysis of senior teams shows 45 per cent of GPs in 2024 had senior investment teams where women made up half the members, up from 38 per cent in 2023, and about 50 per cent reported senior teams with visible minorities.
  • The figures suggest junior-team diversity declined, with visible minorities dropping to 41 per cent and women to 43 per cent in 2024 from 2023, and Geneviève Bouthillier stated there is "still a long way to go."
  • BD C's diversity findings suggest that broader studies found 20 per cent of 14,000 businesses see diverse senior teams as attractive to clients and investors, supporting the benefits of representation.
