'Iconic' 1970's British TV Show 'with Strong Cultural Appeal' Set for Huge Return
The relaunch will add digital animation, live-action and influencer-led shows as The Blair Partnership expands the brand into games, audio and merchandise.
The Wombles announced a global revival launching this summer, featuring a new official YouTube channel blending original 1970s episodes with fresh digital content for a new generation of viewers.
Originally popularized by the BBC's 1973 stop-motion series, the Wimbledon Common inhabitants became cultural icons for their environmental message about recycling. The new programmes feature updated versions of familiar characters like Orinoco, Wellington, and Alderney.
Expanding beyond YouTube, The Blair Partnership has consolidated intellectual property rights to develop television, film, and live events. Founding partner Neil Blair said, "The Wombles is an iconic British brand with strong cultural appeal."
Digital animation will bring the characters to life, replacing traditional stop-motion techniques while collaborating with social media influencers. Presenters will demonstrate sustainable living through arts, crafts, cooking, and gardening to engage contemporary audiences.
The reboot was dubbed the "Woke Wombles" by some following a 2020 redesign to promote diversity. Marcus Robertson, son of creator Beresford, criticized the changes at the time, calling them "insulting to her memory.
