Woman receives letter in the mail 72 years after it was sent
A 1953 letter from Army soldier Benedict Gross was returned after 73 years, part of dozens mailed but lost in transit and now slowly coming back to the Gross family.
- Anna Moch found a letter dated June 10, 1953 addressed to the Gross family of Kintyre, N.D. in her mailbox three days before Christmas 2025.
- According to the family, Benedict Gross wrote dozens of Army letters, and last fall, he said, `I stuck them all in an envelope, taped it, put my name on the front and the back, and mailed it,' after mailing them back.
- Postal handling left letters separated, with Ben later receiving an empty envelope, one letter with Anna Moch having its seal broken, others with Gross siblings, and about 15 still missing.
- Moch said she was shocked, studied the date June 10, 1953, and noted the letter read like they were going into battle; she grew up near the Gross family farm and knows Valentine Gross, now in Bismarck.
- With only 'Kintyre, North Dakota' on the envelope, more than 70 years later, the Gross family letters are slowly being returned, and neighbors marvel at the odds.
