Woman’s Brain Tumor Misdiagnosed as Flu-Like Symptoms
Karen Tait was bedridden for two years after misdiagnosed flu-like symptoms delayed detection of a grade 2 benign brain tumour, later removed in surgery at Addenbrooke's Hospital.
- Karen Tait, 57, was confined to bed for two years after worsening symptoms were dismissed by medics, and a brain tumour was later identified at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.
- Repeated visits to GPs produced diagnoses suggesting fibromyalgia, depression or menopause, with Karen Tait told the problem was 'in my head'.
- Her gynaecologist booked a sedation MRI at Norwich Hospital after Karen Tait was too ill for a routine scan, while Neil Day, 58, and daughter Elle, 30, provided caregiving and advocacy.
- Following the operation, clinicians reported that surgeons at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, removed most of the grade 2 benign meningioma with clear margins, and Karen Tait said, 'While I was in the hospital, doctors confirmed that I had a grade 2 benign meningioma.'
- The Brain Tumour Charity awarded a 1.5 million 'Quest for Cures' grant to study why some meningiomas respond better to radiotherapy, said Dr Simon Newman, chief scientific officer.
