MARTIN COUNTY, FLORIDA, JUL 24 – A trapper located the 11-foot alligator after it severely injured a woman who was hospitalized with broken bones and lacerations, officials said.

  • On July 24, 2025, the Martin County Sheriff's Office reported a 27-year-old woman was hospitalized after being bitten by an 11-foot alligator in the South Fork of the St. Lucie River near Charlie Leighton Park and pulled underwater.
  • The Martin County Sheriff's Office said they waded in waist-deep water with their dog on Wednesday, in an area inhabited by about 1.3 million alligators, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded by beginning their search for the gator, and Lt. Michael McCarthy said, `always assume there is an alligator in the area` as of Thursday morning.
  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed on Thursday that they have not yet captured the gator and will continue removal efforts, as eight unprovoked alligator attacks occur annually, according to FWC reports.
