Midwest Woman Catches Cyclospora Parasite on Honeymoon
Health officials linked the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell, and Michigan has reported more than 3,000 illnesses, the CDC said.
Newlywed Gretchen Pleuss contracted the cyclospora parasite while camping at Yellowstone National Park during her honeymoon. "I felt fine until we got out here," Pleuss said of her illness onset.
Federal health officials on Thursday identified shredded lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell locations across five U.S. states as the outbreak source. At least 34 states have reported cyclospora cases.
Wisconsin's Department of Health reported 43 cases, while more than 3,000 people were sickened in Michigan. Milwaukee resident Jacque Lebreck also contracted the parasite, saying, "There were many of us that had the same drink."
Doctors are treating both women with antibiotics to clear the parasite. Pleuss described symptoms as "incessant diarrhea" and intestines feeling "really tight, like something is seizing them."
Despite the circumstances, the couple is remaining positive, with Pleuss saying they are "making the best of it" at Yellowstone National Park during recovery.
