Woman From Deftones’ 'Around the Fur' Album Art Looks Back: "Just Me Having a Kick-Ass Time, You Know?”
Lisa Hughes and photographer Rich Kosick clarify rumors and share how the jacuzzi shot became the iconic 1997 Deftones album cover, still popular on merchandise today.
- Jenkem tracked down Lisa Hughes and found that she rejected rumours of being a groupie, calling herself `this awesome chick from Auburn` and `just me having a kick-ass time`.
- Photographer Rich Kosick said he accompanied Deftones in Seattle and shot a candid, top-down fisheye jacuzzi frame at their Seattle condo; weeks later Maverick and Kevin Reagan reviewed mockups and chose that image for the cover.
- Kosick recalled he `went up and took a couple two photos` during sessions for 'Around the Fur' , and Hughes called the image `a little risqué` while dismissing minor details with `Who gives a shit?`
- The photograph has since become an enduring cultural image on t-shirts, while Deftones continue to record and tour, releasing Private Music last summer with a five-star NME review.
- Later this year the band will play huge shows in Dublin and Edinburgh as part of their 2026 UK and European headline tour, with frontman Chino Moreno calling Hughes `a friend we befriended while we were there in Seattle`.
