Woman Dies After Entering Des Plaines River to Rescue Son in Libertyville
Officials said she entered the water to help the boy reach a family member before going under and later dying at a hospital.
On Sunday, August 16, 2026, 31-year-old Angelina Khalimendik of Hinsdale drowned in the Des Plaines River at Independence Grove Forest Preserve after entering the water to rescue her son from being swept away.
Recent torrential rains flooded the river with debris and extra water, creating treacherous conditions. Around 7 p.m., Khalimendik jumped in after her son was swept up while the family was fishing.
After helping her son reach a family member, Khalimendik "went underwater," officials said. Bystanders and family members pulled her from the river; the Libertyville Fire Department arrived within two minutes with medical aid.
Paramedics transported Khalimendik to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was pronounced dead. Lake County Forest Preserves Police Chief Ron Davis said he was "deeply saddened" by the tragic death.
The Lake County Forest Preserves Police and Lake County Coroner's Office are investigating the incident. On Monday, the family returned to the preserve, and autopsy results confirmed the death was consistent with drowning.
