Florida Woman Bitten, Pulled Underwater by Alligator During Boat Outing: Sheriff
MARTIN COUNTY, FLORIDA, JUL 25 – The 27-year-old woman was bitten and pulled underwater by an 11-foot alligator while swimming with her dog; Florida averages eight unprovoked alligator attacks annually, officials said.
- While wading in waist-deep water near Charlie Leighton Park boat ramp, the woman was bitten, and she was treated at 7.51pm before being flown to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, Martin County Sheriff's Office officials said.
- Stone Lequerique, alligator wrangler with over 12 years, said `a textbook scenario`, noting that in waist-deep water, a gator likely mistook her for a raccoon, possum, or small fox.
- The state hosts approximately 1.3 million alligators, and on average there are eight unprovoked alligator attacks in Florida each year, reported the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
- The woman survived, and Stone Lequerique said she was very lucky to have done so, after being pulled underwater by the alligator.
- No update has been provided on the alligator’s status, Stone Lequerique said, highlighting ongoing safety concerns while urging caution around freshwater.
