Woman doctor injured in Quetta acid attack; suspect killed in encounter
The provincial government said it would cover treatment costs as doctors demanded stronger security after the attack.
On Saturday, a lift operator attacked postgraduate trainee Dr. Mahnoor Nasir with acid at Sandeman Provincial Hospital in Quetta, police said. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Hamayun Shah.
CCTV footage captured the suspect fleeing the ward after the assault, leading authorities to launch search operations across Quetta. Police killed Shah during an exchange of gunfire near the Nushki bus stand.
Dr. Mahnoor sustained around 35% burns to her face and body, requiring specialized care. The Balochistan government transferred her via air ambulance to Karachi for advanced medical treatment at government expense.
Young Doctors Association Balochistan President Dr. Hayee Baloch announced a boycott of hospital services, excluding emergencies, to protest security lapses. The association demanded a transparent judicial inquiry and removal of the health secretary.
Adviser to the Balochistan Chief Minister Shahid Rind vowed "no compromise" on the protection of medical staff, confirming authorities are investigating the incident from multiple angles. The investigation aims to ensure accountability for the attack.
