Music Legend Sheila E. Blasts Handling of Woman’s Death at Jazz Festival in Southern California
- On Saturday, Shari Sanders of Altadena died after being found unconscious in the VIP section of the annual Carson Jazz Festival at Anderson Memorial Park during extreme heat.
- Temperatures exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit as Sanders suffered a heat-related illness, her family told KTLA. Dr. Dionne Leslie, a festival attendee, performed CPR for 20 minutes but could not revive her.
- Legendary percussionist Sheila E., the festival's headliner, criticized promoters for allowing the show to continue while Sanders' body remained on-site until around 5 p.m. She said "I would have never, never gotten onstage" had she known.
- In an Instagram video shared Monday, the artist condemned the event's lack of hydration stations. She urged Carson City officials to improve safety, citing long wait times and insufficient water access for attendees.
- Sanders' cause of death remains under investigation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's office and city of Carson representatives have not yet returned requests for comment regarding the incident.
