Woman dies trying to rescue dog from sea
Police said the dog was recovered safe and well, while the woman died in hospital and the man remains in critical condition.
On Saturday, a woman in her 60s died and a man in his 60s remains in critical condition after both entered the sea at Thornton-Cleveleys in Lancashire to rescue their pet dog.
The couple entered the water after their dog became stuck, prompting an emergency response by HM Coastguard shortly after 8:31pm on Saturday.
Rescuers retrieved the dog 'safe and well' from the water, while paramedics treated the pair at the scene near Fleetwood Beach Cafe before transport to hospital.
Lancashire Constabulary confirmed there are 'no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman's death,' and officers will prepare a file for the coroner in due course.
The incident prompted renewed reminders about the dangers of entering open water, where conditions can quickly become unpredictable and hazardous, even for strong swimmers.
