Woman arrested after 2-year-old child locked in hot car in 107 degree weather
LAKE CITY, FLORIDA, JUL 19 – Tipora Merriex faces child neglect charges after leaving her 2-year-old alone in a locked car during 107-degree heat, police said the child was rescued unharmed.
- On Saturday, July 19, Lake City police discovered an 18-year-old mother had left her upset two-year-old locked alone inside a hot, newer-model Cadillac Escalade parked near the Regal Cinema 90.
- The mother, Tripura Merriex, allegedly left the child unattended while returning to the theater after the child caused disruptions by crying loudly, claiming she accidentally locked her in the vehicle.
- Officers arrived at approximately 5:49 p.m. and shattered the driver's side window to free the distressed toddler inside the vehicle, who was flushed, sweating, and crying amid a heat index of 107 degrees in 94-degree weather.
- Merriex was arrested on charges of child neglect without bodily harm and is being held on a $50,000 bond at the Columbia County Detention Center, while her child was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
