Woman Accused of Faking ICE Kidnapping to Solicit Donations, DOJ Says
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, JUL 18 – Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderon allegedly staged a fake ICE kidnapping to solicit $4,500 in donations and discredit immigration enforcement, federal prosecutors said.
- On July 17, 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office charged Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderon with conspiracy and false statements, alleging she staged a hoax in a Jack in the Box parking lot in South Los Angeles.
- Her daughter launched a GoFundMe to 'find her' and fabricated rescue photos, planning a July 6 press conference to solicit funds and sympathy, law enforcement believes.
- The Department of Homeland Security launched an investigation, phone records and security footage debunked the abduction claim, and surveillance video showed her calm departure.
- U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli termed the hoax a `well-orchestrated conspiracy`, and Calderon, now in custody, faces up to five years per count.
- The U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said Calderon is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in the coming weeks, and the hoax diverted DHS resources to the investigation.
