Woman, 24, Left in Hospital with 'Oxygen Mask Not Connected' Dies
The inquest heard staff gave her an unconnected oxygen mask and left her in a corridor despite low blood oxygen and a high heart rate.
An inquest into the 2024 death of Clarissa Street opened Wednesday at Rochdale Coroner's Court, examining her care at Royal Oldham Hospital before she died on August 14.
Paramedics initially suggested Clarissa was "overreacting and having a panic attack" upon arrival; Staff Nurse Michelle Neale later gave her a disconnected oxygen mask "to try and regulate her breathing."
Despite presenting with low oxygen levels and an elevated pulse, Clarissa remained in a hospital corridor for an hour while Neale acknowledged the disconnected mask was inappropriate.
A senior nurse decided to give Clarissa fluids and keep an eye on her because she was "young," while Neale transferred care to a more experienced colleague.
Medical evidence indicated the 2024 embolism was unprovoked and it "cannot be said that the two are linked" to her 2017 pulmonary embolism, which was provoked and required no long-term anticoagulants.
