Wisteria growing on pergola needs to be pruned by half

NDSU Extension expert Don Kinzler recommends pruning wisteria now to reduce vine bulk by half and promote flowering by training new growth over pergola tops.

  • Now in spring, gardeners with Wisteria on a pergola should prune the vines to reduce the massive tangle by about half, stimulating vigorous new growth.
  • Since Wisteria tend to grow back onto themselves, gardeners should use Twine or wire to fasten stems over the pergola top and coax the vines to remain where wanted.
  • Don Kinzler of North Dakota State University advises that packaged plants from Chain stores may languish if they begin growing early; Once dormancy is broken, plants are susceptible to freezing temperatures.
  • Because seeds grow rapidly, Planting heat-loving vegetables like Squash, Pumpkin, and Melons too early indoors produces weak, gangly plants; wait until late spring for optimal results.
  • For gardeners in Northern areas, the ideal window is a 10-day period in late spring; When the spring has been chilly, wait until Memorial Day to plant outdoors.
