Wisconsin Schools, Teachers Sue for More Funding From GOP-Led Legislature
The lawsuit alleges inadequate state funding forces local tax hikes and risks educational equity for high-needs students, citing a decline in test scores over 20 years, plaintiffs said.
- On Monday, the Wisconsin PTA, Law Forward and Wisconsin Education Association Council sued the Wisconsin Legislature in Eau Claire County Circuit Court over inadequate school funding.
- Plaintiffs say the state now pays about half education costs, blaming rising high-needs students, weak special education reimbursement, and decades of falling test scores.
- Per-Student spending rose to $18,592 from $16,820, and 2024 had 241 referendums with 169 approved; Jeff Mandell said, `When schools are underfunded, students lose opportunities and communities suffer.'
- Because lawmakers and the governor have yet to reach a deal, the suit asks the Wisconsin Supreme Court to adopt a new finance system, which will almost certainly move up for review.
