US Rep. Tom Tiffany says he sustained minor injuries after plane makes emergency landing

Tiffany and the pilot suffered only minor injuries after the plane lost power and made a water landing, according to his statement.

  • On Saturday night, Representative Tom Tiffany survived an emergency water landing in Lake Wausau after his small plane lost power near Wausau Downtown Airport. The Republican gubernatorial candidate and pilot sustained minor injuries when the four-seat Bonanza aircraft submerged.
  • Tiffany was returning home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner when the plane lost power upon approach. The pilot landed the aircraft on the water at about 9 p.m. Saturday, according to the Marathon County Sheriff.
  • After landing, the two men called 911 and swam to a shallow area as the plane began to sink. The Wausau Fire Department reached them by boat and transported both individuals to Aspirus Wausau Hospital for treatment.
  • Tiffany expressed gratitude to first responders, while his Democratic opponent David Crowley wished them quick recovery. Crowley added, "Grateful to God that Congressman Tiffany and no one else was hurt in this horrifying incident."
  • The Federal Aviation Administration will lead the investigation into the crash, with support from the Wisconsin DNR and State Patrol. Authorities marked the submerged aircraft with a buoy and requested that the public avoid the area.
