Wimbledon expansion planning permission cleared by UK court after challenge
WIMBLEDON, LONDON, JUL 21 – The High Court ruled the Greater London Authority lawfully approved the £200 million Wimbledon expansion, enabling nearly triple the site size and 27 acres of new public parkland.
- On July 21, Mr Justice Saini dismissed the challenge, upholding the GLA planning approval for Wimbledon expansion.
- Following the GLA’s approval last September, SWP initiated a challenge, claiming the decision was unlawful due to land restrictions and covenants, which the High Court recently dismissed.
- The site, spanning the former Wimbledon Park Golf Club and nearly tripling its footprint, allows qualifying matches to be held on-site following the approval of the expansion plan.
- The All England Club welcomed the ruling and said they were delighted by the decision, according to Deborah Jevans.
- A hearing in January 2026 is set to examine whether a statutory trust over the land exists, with SWP advised to seek an appeal to the Court of Appeal, as separate proceedings continue.
