Wimbledon 2026 results: Ben Shelton suffers stunning upset loss in opening round
On Tuesday, Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen upset No. 4 seed Ben Shelton at Wimbledon in a five-set thriller, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 , 6-2, 7-6 .
Shelton held match point at 9-8 in the deciding tiebreaker but made an unforced error, allowing Virtanen to win three straight points after 4 hours, 21 minutes of play.
Expressing frustration, Shelton said, "This is definitely one of the toughest losses of my career," noting he did not believe he played poorly but that things simply did not go his way.
Virtanen became the first male Finnish player to defeat a top-five seed in a major during the Open Era, advancing to face British native Arthur Fery in the second round.
This result compounds a difficult stretch for Shelton, who was eliminated early at the French Open; he now targets the US Open later this summer for a bounce-back performance.
Finnish tennis player Otto Virtanen qualified for the second round of Wimbledon, after defeating the fifth player in the world, Ben Shelton, 6:4, 3:6, 6:7 (8), 6:2, 7:6 (9).
