Will Smith’s Early Life Explored in New TV Show After The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reboot
The series follows a teenage rapper and DJ as they chase a record deal, with Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group backing the project.
- Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group are developing "215," a scripted series documenting Will Smith's early life and his musical rise alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff as a hip-hop crossover act.
- Named for Philadelphia's area code, the show tracks Smith and Jazzy Jeff's efforts to "chase a record deal, money and a way out" during the late-1980s hip-hop boom.
- The project marks the first collaboration between Westbrook and private equity firm The Malar Group, led by CEO Sayan Navaratnam, who aim to develop a broader slate of films and television projects.
- Westbrook Studios President Terence Carter stated, "215 is especially meaningful to us" because it celebrates Philadelphia during a defining era of the city's late-'80s/early-'90s hip-hop scene.
- Following Westbrook's success with Bel-Air and Cobra Kai, the new series explores the duo's friendship and ambition, though no writer is currently attached to the project.
