Will PlayStation games actually get cheaper once physical discs disappear?
A former Square Enix strategist says digital-only PlayStation pricing could fall as publishers compete more directly on the PlayStation Store.
Sony has added a notice to new PS5 consoles warning that the company will cease supporting physical media for new games in January 2028, marking a significant shift toward digital-only distribution.
Former Square Enix strategist Jacob Navok argues that removing manufacturing and distribution costs could drive digital prices lower, predicting "more sales and dynamic pricing similar to Steam" as publishers compete.
Conversely, Dutch consumer group Stichting Massaschade alleges Sony's exclusive PlayStation Store control results in artificially inflated prices, claiming digital games and DLC can cost up to 47% more than physical alternatives.
Reports indicate Sony has conducted A/B pricing experiments across more than 190 games in 70-plus regions, while no authorized third-party digital marketplace exists for PlayStation unlike competing platforms.
Microsoft is reportedly exploring Positron, a disc-to-digital system allowing players to carry physical Xbox purchases into digital libraries, while concerns persist regarding digital ownership rights and game delisting.
