Will India standardise AC cooling range? Plan afoot to set 20C minimum temperature — Here's what we know
- On June 10, 2025, the Union Ministry of Power revealed plans to establish a nationwide standard temperature range for air conditioners, set between 20°C and 28°C.
- The government proposed this regulation to reduce energy consumption and ease increasing pressure on the power grid caused by low AC temperature settings.
- The Bureau of Energy Efficiency is developing a framework to enforce the temperature limits, which would require AC manufacturers to adjust device programming accordingly.
- Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal highlighted that increasing the AC temperature by just 1°C has the potential to reduce peak electricity demand by around 3 gigawatts, accompanied by an estimated 6% decrease in energy consumption per degree.
- This move aims to lower carbon emissions, reduce electricity bills, and encourage efficient cooling habits amid rising AC usage and increasing peak power demand of 241 GW.
