Wildfires prompt partial Boundary Waters closure, fire ban
Officials say 16 small wildfires have burned since Tuesday as campfires and wood-fueled stoves are barred, while gas stoves remain allowed.
Starting Saturday, July 11, the Forest Service will close 13 entry points to a portion of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and ban all campfires throughout the entire area to contain escalating wildfires.
Since Tuesday, the Forest Service detected 16 small wildfires burning in the Superior National Forest, with four located within the BWCAW; the Bear Trap, Thumb, and Wolfpack fires prompted the closure.
At 20 acres, the Thumb fire is the largest blaze as of Friday afternoon, with fires burning in the LaCroix Ranger District within Louis County.
Remaining areas of the BWCAW remain open, though campfires and charcoal or wood stoves are prohibited; gas or propane cook stoves are permitted.
Northern Minnesota faces high wildfire potential across all ownerships, the Forest Service said Friday, urging visitors to exercise extreme caution with any sources of ignition.
