Wildfires: 150 Evacuated From Spain’s Costa Brava
Strong winds forced residents in 10 municipalities to stay home as more than 200 firefighters and helicopters fought the expanding blaze, officials said.
- On Friday, hundreds of Spanish firefighters battled an out-of-control wildfire near the Costa Brava that devastated around 750 hectares of forest near the municipality of La Bisbal d'Emporda in Catalonia.
- Driven by strong tramontana winds, the fire generated secondary outbreaks in the Les Gavarres massif, while Rural Agents suspect the blaze may have been sparked by mechanical works on a road.
- Regional authorities ordered residents of 10 municipalities, including Platja d'Aro, to stay at home, affecting around 12,000 people; some 40,000 received Es-Alert mobile warnings.
- Catalan leader Salvador Illa requested support from the Military Emergencies Unit as Catalan fire service chief David Borrell warned, "The difficulty is that it will not be static."
- Spain remains on the front line of climate change, which scientists say increases extreme heat intensity; last year, wildfires devoured almost 400,000 hectares, the highest figure recorded by the European Forest Fire Information System.
