Wildfire smoke set to drop mid-Island air quality
Wildfire smoke is expected to keep air quality poor for more than 48 hours in some areas, Environment Canada said.
- On Saturday, Aug. 15, Environment Canada issued orange and yellow air quality warnings across the Southern Interior, with orange alerts covering 100 Mile House and the South Okanagan from Summerland to Osoyoos.
- Wildfires burning across BC, including the Bald Range Wildfire, continue to push smoke into the Okanagan, where poor air quality is expected to last for at least the next 24 to 48 hours.
- Residents should reduce strenuous outdoor activity and stay indoors with cleaner air; those unsure about medical needs should call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, or dial 9-1-1 for emergencies.
- Scoopz Ice Cream owner Adrianne Erlandson said smoke over the Ribfest weekend was "pretty stressful," while Kamloops residents like Woodward describe the air as "muggy and terrible" for parents.
- Cooler, wetter conditions have led to clearing in many regions, and Environment Canada expects conditions to improve across the Central and Southern Interior, with the next update scheduled for Sunday.
