Wildfire ignites off Coquihalla Highway, 25 km north of Hope
Crews and aircraft are working to contain the blaze, which is not threatening nearby structures and has kept Highway 5 open, officials said.
- A wildfire discovered Wednesday evening near Dewdney Creek, approximately 25 km southwest of Hope, has grown to 15 hectares. The BC Wildfire Service is responding to the blaze, which remains visible from the Coquihala Highway.
- First reported just after 6 p.m. Wednesday near Carolin Mine Road, the fire is suspected to be human-caused. BCWS crews are actively containing the blaze, which is situated just east of the Coquihala.
- Initial attack crews, supported by rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, established water access routes on Thursday to launch a direct attack. Firefighting activity remains visible to drivers along the Coquihala Highway.
- Highway 5 remains open to travelers, and the wildfire does not currently pose a threat to structures or critical infrastructure. Firefighting aircraft activity may be visible from the route.
- Drivers are advised to avoid stopping on the road to view or photograph the fire, as doing so could pose a safety risk and interfere with ongoing response efforts by BCWS. Smoke visibility may tempt travelers to stop.
