UPDATE: Increased Fire Behaviour Expected on Similkameen Blaze
OKANAGAN-SIMILKAMEEN, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 17 – The Otter Creek fire near Merritt is contained at 1.2 hectares and suspected to be human-caused, with investigations ongoing, BC Wildfire reported.
- Off Highway 5A between Merritt and Princeton, BC Wildfire Service reports the Otter Creek wildfire is now held at 1.2 hectares.
- Suspected to be human caused, the fire originated on Wednesday afternoon off Coalmont Road near the Merritt–Princeton Highway, and the origin remains under investigation.
- Additional ground crews arrived Wednesday, BCWS said, to establish and secure containment lines and support response efforts.
- The blaze is anticipated to spread, `Increased fire behaviour and smoke are expected`, BCWS said.
- Environment Canada forecast winds of 70 km/hr from early evening until midnight and temperatures on Thursday surpassing 30 C with a mid-20s dip by Saturday .
