Wildfire forecast anticipates high risk for new wildfires in B.C., Prairies, N.W.T.
The 2026 wildfire season in Canada started slower than in 2025, but the overall risk of wildfires remains high with 65 active wildfires nationwide, six of which are out of control.
The highest wildfire risk areas are in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories, with the Prairies more at risk in July, and Ontario and Quebec facing higher risks in August.
In 2025, Canada experienced its second-worst wildfire season on record, burning nearly 90,000 square kilometers with 6,000 wildfires.
The wildfires in 2025 forced 76,000 people to evacuate.
