Wicked: For Good Shatters Records With Magical $225 Million Box Office
Wicked: For Good earned $150 million in North America and $226 million worldwide, driven by 71% female ticket buyers and IMAX's record $15.5 million domestic contribution.
- On Sunday, Universal Pictures' Wicked: For Good earned $150 million domestically and $226 million globally, marking the biggest opening for a Broadway musical adaptation and second biggest debut of the year behind A Minecraft Movie's $162 million.
- Universal began rolling out previews earlier this week, with Monday previews earning $6.1 million from 1,050 theaters and Wednesday previews $6.5 million from 2,300 theaters.
- IMAX showings accounted for $15.5 million, or 11% of the domestic haul, while by Friday the film played in 4,115 North American locations and 83% of audiences said they'd 'definitely recommend'.
- The film set a record for biggest Broadway adaptation, surpassing the $164.2 million benchmark, and exhibition executives say For Good's success is vitally important as the industry enters the final weeks of the year.
- Early next week, Zootopia 2 arrives and will test holiday demand as Universal Pictures begins recouping its combined production cost around $300 million as of Nov. 23.
