FA Cup: Why VAR Denied Chelsea Two Penalties in 1-0 Defeat to Man City

Chelsea were denied two spot-kicks as Antoine Semenyo’s second-half backheel gave Manchester City the title.

  • On Saturday at Wembley, Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final. Antoine Semenyo scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute from Erling Haaland's cutback, securing a domestic double for Pep Guardiola's side.
  • Referee Darren England denied Chelsea's first-half penalty appeal after Joao Pedro went down following a challenge from Abdukodir Khusanov. VAR Peter Bankes reviewed the incident but did not recommend that the referee examine it on the pitch.
  • Chelsea's second-half penalty appeals were also waved away after Jorrel Hato collided with Khusanov. Interim head coach Calum McFarlane argued the collision warranted a spot-kick, stating: "In terms of the penalty incidents, I thought they're tough calls but for me the Jorrel Hato and Khusanov collision in the box is a penalty."
  • Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg and official Darren Cann defended the decisions, telling media outlets the challenges were shoulder-to-shoulder contact with both players in playing distance of the ball. Clattenburg told The Chelsea Chronicle: "No penalty for me, the two players came together, shoulder to shoulder, both within playing distance of the ball."
  • Chelsea now turn attention to the Premier League, where they sit ninth in the table with two matches remaining. The Blues must secure results against Tottenham and Sunderland to pursue European qualification for next season.
