India Get Stuck in Traffic Jam on Way to Fifth T20 Against England, Start Delayed
Heavy traffic delayed India’s arrival by about 5 minutes, forcing match officials to postpone pre-match routines.
On Saturday, the toss for the 5th T20I between England and India at the Utilita Bowl was delayed after the Indian team arrived late. Heavy traffic from Southampton obstructed their journey, postponing the scheduled 2:00 p.m. coin flip.
While England remained at the on-site hotel, India stayed in the Ocean Village area, requiring a longer commute. The Utilita Bowl, situated in West End, is accessible via only one road, complicating access.
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta confirmed the squad was caught in extensive local traffic during the broadcast. The team bus arrived at 2:05 p.m., five minutes after the scheduled toss time.
Match officials postponed pre-match routines to allow for shortened physical preparation. This marks the second time in two years an England men's international has been delayed by traffic.
India has maintained the top spot in the ICC T20I Team Rankings for over 1,600 days. A loss in this final match would end their historic dominance, allowing England to claim the world number one crown.
It's rare for a team to get stuck in a traffic jam, disrupting a match. This is exactly what happened to the Indian team in Southampton. The Shreyas Iyer-led team couldn't reach the stadium on time.
