Fitness Influencer, 38, Dies During Ironman Lake Swim
Police are investigating the death of the 38-year-old influencer after a lost-swimmer search ended with her recovery from Lake Woodlands.
- On Saturday, authorities recovered 38-year-old Brazilian athlete Mara Flavia Araujo from Lake Woodlands after she disappeared during the swimming portion of the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas race.
- The Woodlands Fire Chief Palmer Buck reported rescue crews were notified of a missing swimmer at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, with dive teams eventually locating the victim in about 10 feet of water.
- Mara, an accomplished athlete with nearly 60,000 Instagram followers, had been struggling with health issues before the race. Friend Luis Taveira said, "She was ill before the trip, she wasn't okay."
- The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office launched a death investigation as Ironman Texas organizers stated, "We are saddened to confirm the death of a race participant during the swim portion of today."
- This incident occurred nine years after Glen Bruemmer, 54, also died during the swimming portion of the Houston-based annual event, which requires a 2.4-mile swim in waters averaging about 74 degrees.
