Who remains in French Open contention after Sinner and Djokovic defeated?
Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic exited early, leaving younger contenders and in-form seeds with a clearer path to the title.
The French Open men's draw opened Friday after top-ranked Jannik Sinner lost in the second round and 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca defeated Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller.
With two-time reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz absent, Sinner was expected to capture his first French Open title, while Djokovic entered the tournament facing questions about his form following a shoulder injury.
Fonseca became the first teenager to defeat the Serbian at a Grand Slam event, while 19-year-old Rafael Jodar reached the fourth round at a major for the first time.
Remaining contenders include second-seeded Zverev, who has not dropped a set, alongside Casper Ruud and French teenager Moise Kouame, who reached the third round after a five-hour match.
Djokovic will wait until Wimbledon to pursue his next title, leaving the field competitive as the tournament proceeds without its top-seeded favorites.
Djokovic out, Sinner out, Alcaraz out - the door to the French-Open-Triumph is wide open for Alexander Zverev. In the third round the tennis star convinces in the new role of the hunted.
