Navy Identifies Missing Sailor Whose Norfolk-Based Helicopter Made Emergency Landing
Three crew members were rescued and listed in stable condition after the emergency landing, while the Navy says the cause remains under investigation.
- On Tuesday, the U.S. Navy identified Commander Gabriel Edwards, commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, as the sailor missing after an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1.
- Before assuming command of the Nightdippers in July 2025, Edwards served with HSC-22, HSC-84, and HSC-85, accumulating more than 2,000 flight hours across multiple helicopter airframes during his 20-year Navy career.
- Three crew members were rescued and remain in stable condition following the incident. Navy officials said the cause of the emergency landing is under investigation with "no indication" that the helicopter was shot down by hostile action.
- Capt. Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, described Edwards as "the epitome of selfless leadership," while his wife, Rebecca Edwards, expressed gratitude to those who participated in search and rescue efforts.
- Edwards was selected for promotion to captain by the Fiscal Year 2027 O-6 Line Officer Promotion Board and received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and two children.
