WHO, ITU, WIPO Release a New Technical Brief on Using AI in Traditional Medicine
GLOBAL, JUL 11 – The World Health Organization and partners urge development of ethical frameworks to safely integrate AI into traditional medicine, a market projected to reach nearly $600 billion by 2025.
- On July 12, 2025, during the AI for Good Global Summit in Switzerland, WHO, ITU, and WIPO introduced a new technical brief that explores how artificial intelligence can be integrated into traditional medicine to enhance its safety, personalization, and effectiveness.
- The brief highlights how AI is playing an increasingly important role in the wide-ranging practices of traditional, complementary, and integrative health care embraced by billions of people across 170 nations, reflecting a growing global focus on holistic well-being.
- It advocates for AI systems that embrace the rich variety of cultural backgrounds and uphold the rights of Indigenous communities over their data, while calling for the creation of policies that ensure AI’s ethical, secure, and fair application within traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine .
- Dr. Yukiko Nakatani of the WHO emphasized the importance of preventing AI from being exploited in harmful ways, while Edward Kwakwa of WIPO underscored the role of intellectual property in promoting the adoption of AI technologies within traditional medicine.
- The brief suggests AI could accelerate TCIM’s growth and impact, promoting a new healthcare paradigm that honors traditional knowledge while advancing personalized, effective therapies.
