Whitecaps to Become Road Warriors as Vancouver Prepares for FIFA World Cup
The club sits second in MLS and will play away through July while B.C. Place is converted for seven World Cup matches.
The Vancouver Whitecaps, currently second in the MLS standings with an 8-1-2 record, are embarking on eight straight away matches as BC Place prepares for the FIFA World Cup.
Construction crews are installing a temporary grass surface at BC Place to meet FIFA requirements, with the stadium hosting its first World Cup match between Australia and Turkey on June 12.
Head coach Jesper Sorensen explained that travel allows staff to hold small meetings and video sessions with players, while defender Tristan Blackmon noted road trips build team chemistry.
Temporarily displaced, the Whitecaps will host a Canadian Championship quarter-final against Cavalry FC on July 8 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, currently home to Vancouver Rise.
The team resumes regular MLS play in mid-July before finally returning to BC Place on Aug. 1 to host Los Angeles FC.
