Tamil Nadu Unveils Pivotal White Paper on Electricity Sector
The minister said the four power corporations are in heavy loss as the state plans recruitment, substation upgrades and open-access savings.
- On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister R. Nirmalkumar presented a White Paper revealing ₹2.47 lakh crore in debt across TNPDCL, TNPGCL, TNGECL, and TANTRANSCO while assuring no tariff hikes this year.
- The State faces financial strain from heavy reliance on external power, as its own generation capacity meets only 3,495 MW of more than 21,300 MW peak demand, forcing expensive market purchases at ₹17 per unit.
- Only Ennore SEZ and Udangudi remain in progress among four major thermal projects announced several years ago, while ETPS Expansion and Uppur were abandoned after spending more than ₹8,700 crore without explanation.
- Facing a manpower shortfall of nearly 45% against sanctioned strength of 1,40,635 employees, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board proposed recruiting 15,000 personnel and absorbing 5,391 gangmen this year to restore operational stability.
- Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed the department revamp, with plans to save ₹215 crore through long- and medium-term open-access mechanisms while limiting smart meter installations to government buildings only.
