White House transportation chief asks flyers to ‘bring back the Golden Age of Travel’

The U.S. Department of Transportation highlights a 400% rise in in-flight disruptions since 2019 to promote courtesy and safety during peak holiday travel.

  • Yesterday, US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy launched the nationwide civility campaign The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You, targeting U.S. air travelers with a video-driven effort.
  • The DoT said a sharp rise in unruly incidents since 2019 prompted the initiative, citing FAA data showing a 400 percent increase, 13,800 incidents since 2021, and one in five U.S. flight attendants facing physical incidents in 2021.
  • The campaign video opens with archival BOAC footage and the line `Flying was a bastion of civility.`, then shows modern passengers in a montage of unruly behavior including feet on seat headrests and toes operating a touchscreen TV.
  • The department framed the effort as addressing courtesy and safety, stating `This won't just make the travel experience better for the flying public it will ensure the safety of passengers, gate workers, flight attendants and pilots.`
  • The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is expected to be busy, with A4A projecting more than 31 million passengers and 2.8 million daily, especially on November 30 and December 1.
