Missouri Election Chief Faces Whistleblower Lawsuit From Fired Election Integrity Director
The lawsuit says he was fired after warning that officials discussed fabricating a whistleblower complaint and threatening local election workers.
- On Monday, former Missouri election integrity director Nicholas La Strada sued Secretary of State Denny Hoskins in Cole County Circuit Court, alleging retaliatory firing one week after reporting plans to fabricate a whistleblower complaint.
- La Strada alleges staff discussed using a "burner phone" and internet protocol address scrambler to file a fake whistleblower complaint involving the state's voter registration database. He reported these plans to Hoskins before his termination.
- The lawsuit also contends Hoskins' office illegally intervened in a Marshall City Council race by changing vote tallies and improperly spent funds opposing a Louis County ballot measure, the complaint says.
- Attorney Erin N. Vernon questioned the office's integrity, asking, "How can you trust a secretary of state's office when they fired the man who was telling them what they cannot do?" Spokesperson Anne Marie Moy said Hoskins "will not be able to comment on pending litigation."
- Hoskins already faces scrutiny for his role in Missouri's congressional redistricting; the state Supreme Court found him in contempt last Thursday for violating orders regarding U.S. House districts backed by President Donald Trump.
