Tinubu Can Rule Nigeria From Anywhere – Presidency Insists

- The Presidency dismissed concerns about President Bola Tinubu's prolonged absence from Nigeria, stating he is "hale and hearty" and will return this week. Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga argued the president can govern effectively from abroad in the digital age.
- Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for a three-week annual leave the Presidency later termed a working vacation. While in France, he met President Emmanuel Macron and facilitated agreements for the Gateway Deep Sea Port, expected to attract $7 billion in investment.
- Criticism mounted after the president skipped the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Opposition figure Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, questioned his whereabouts, noting Vice President Kashim Shettima represented Nigeria at the gathering.
- Opposition parties, including a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, criticized the vacation extension. Some lawmakers called for the National Assembly to examine whether constitutional procedures were followed regarding the prolonged absence of both Tinubu and Shettima.
- Upon his return, the president is scheduled to attend events marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary. He will also attend the premiere of a film commemorating MKO Abiola, who died in detention after the 12 June 1993 presidential election annulment.
