As early as December of last year, WABetaInfo reported on an innovation in Whatsapp's Android beta that a message reminder was implemented there. This allows Whatsapp to occasionally send notifications to highlight unread messages from contacts that users interact with most often, especially for people who are flushed with Whatsapp messages and thus accidentally miss messages from otherwise frequently used contacts.
