WhatsApp’s Secret New Feature Will Delete Texts Once You’ve Read Them — and It Could Be Coming to iOS and Android Soon
WABetaInfo says the feature adds a second timer with 5-minute, 1-hour, or 12-hour options after a message is read.
- WhatsApp is testing a new 'After reading' feature for disappearing messages, providing an added layer of privacy to conversations. The option appears in the messaging app's Default message timer settings.
- Currently, WhatsApp allows users to set messages to vanish after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. The new 'After reading' option functions as a secondary timer triggered after the recipient views the message.
- When selecting 'After reading', users can choose whether messages disappear 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours after being viewed. Unread messages always disappear after 24 hours by default.
- WABetaInfo discovered the feature is available to some beta testers on Android and through TestFlight, with a limited number of Users potentially accessing it via the App Store.
- WhatsApp includes a disclaimer that users 'may find other ways to save messages,' and it remains unclear when the platform will officially roll out this Privacy feature to the general public.
