Oregon Overdose Deaths Dropped in 2024, Part of National Trend, Officials Say
- On Friday, the Oregon Health Authority reported a 22% decrease in overdose deaths in the state, with the total falling to 1,480 in 2024.
- This decrease follows a nationwide 26.9% drop from 110,000 deaths in 2023 to about 80,400 in 2024 per CDC data.
- Officials credit declines in overdose deaths to improved treatment systems, wider naloxone availability, enhanced public education and prevention efforts, as well as shifts in the fentanyl market.
- Dr. Dean Sidelinger, Oregon’s state epidemiologist, expressed cautious optimism about the recent decline in overdose fatalities, while emphasizing that the number of deaths remains alarmingly high across the state.
- Despite the decline, Oregon continues expanding treatment, harm reduction, and recovery supports to address the persistent overdose crisis.
