‘Explosive’ Diarrhea Cases Caused by Parasite Reach 1,700: Here’s How You Can Stay Safe
The agency has confirmed 843 cases across 31 states and 86 hospitalizations, while investigators have not identified a specific food source.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Friday at least 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across 31 states, with more than 1,500 additional possible reports under review.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, typically contracted by eating contaminated produce, though investigators have not yet identified the specific food source.
Patients often experience "explosive" diarrhea, fatigue, and stomach cramps lasting weeks or months; federal health officials report 86 hospitalizations and no deaths to date.
David Relman, the Thomas C. and Joan M. Merigan Professor in Medicine at Stanford Medicine, noted a "paucity of information" about case clusters since surveillance resources degraded in early 2025.
Health officials advise washing fresh produce thoroughly and seeking medical care if symptoms persist beyond 48 hours, as infections typically surge during the May-to-August peak season.
