What to know about the trial of former Tiananmen vigil organizers before a verdict
A verdict is expected Friday in the trial of Lee Cheuk-yan and Chow Hang-tung, former leaders of the now-disbanded Hong Kong Alliance, charged under Hong Kong's national security law for inciting subversion and facing up to 10 years in jail if convicted.
The Hong Kong Alliance organized the annual Tiananmen vigil for 30 years before it was banned in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Prosecutors claim the defendants incited the overthrow of the Communist Party, while the defense argues their slogans called for democracy and opposed dictatorship.
The trial is viewed by critics as a key test of Hong Kong's civil rights and judicial independence under the national security law.
